How climate made history?

Una de las preguntas que abrían nuestra proyecto de comprensión era la siguiente "¿Qué relación existe entre el ser humano y la naturaleza?". El documental que hemos visto hoy titulado "Cómo el clima determinó la historia" responde, en gran parte, a esta cuestión.
Por un cambio climático nos alzamos sobre dos piernas en África. Un cambio climático nos permitió salir del continente africano y extendernos por el mundo. También un cambio climático nos permitió desarrollar la agricultura y la ganadería... Desde la atalaya del presente podemos observar cómo el ser humano ha superado terribles crisis climáticas y siempre ha encontrado la manera de sobreponerse y mejorar. Un tema importante, inquietante, pero también esperanzador, el futuro está en nuestras manos.

Os invitamos a volver a ver el vídeo en inglés y, si tenéis alguna dificultad, alguna parte en castellano. Recordad que entre las opciones de Youtube tenéis la de subtitularlo en inglés.

VOCABULARY. HOW CLIMATE MADE HISTORY  (in order of appearance)

Polar ice caps = a thick cover of ice over an area.
Glaciers = an extended mass of ice formed from snow falling and accumulating over the years and moving very slowly
Devastating drought = a long period of dry weather
Average temperature = a quantity that represents or approximates an arithmetic mean
Frozen water = turned into ice
Icy temperature = very cold
Tundra and taiga
Hominid genus
Coping with (cope with, handle, deal with) = to face and deal with responsibilities, problems, or difficulties, successfully or in a calm or adequate manner
Fires kept temperature constant
Large quantities of meat
To hunt large animals (big in size)
Physically demanding = requiring more than is generally felt by others to be due
Tough = capable of great endurance
The Earth revolves around the Sun
Regular climatic variations = steady and even; not changing. Balanced.
Sea currents = a portion of a large body of water that moves in a certain direction
Gulf stream =
A special drill = a tool with a cutting edge for making holes in firm materials, esp. by rotation
1 mm of sample equals 1 year = a small part from a larger whole, showing the quality, style, or nature of the whole
Mild climate = not severe or extreme; Moderate in strength, degree, or force
To be under constant stress
To be pushed to the limit
The newcomers were tall and slender = a person or thing that has recently arrived / Slim; light and graceful
To throw a spear = a long wooden shaft with a sharp-pointed head of metal or stone attached to it.
Temperatures rose (to rise)
Ideal living conditions
Nomadic people = a member of a people who have no permanent single place for living
To worship = reverence for God, a sacred personage, or a sacred object.
The Fertile Crescent
Food source = the point or place from which something originates
To cultivate cereals
To sow crop = to scatter (seed); the plant or the product of the plant
Farmers and cattle breeders = people that produces offspring of large farm animals (raised for their meat or milk)
Hunter-gatherers = people that used to hunt and collect fruits, vegetables..
Bread and beer
To melt water = to become liquid by heat

Icy water released (to release) = to free; to let go.
